At one of our recent family meetings we were discussing how as therapists and teachers we meet some truly inspiring people everyday. An important part of our roles are to really listen to our clients and their stories they have to share.
Then we thought, how great it would be to share all our stories too!
This week we spoke to Clare Everett our Pilates Teacher
What therapy do you provide at PTW
Pilates – specialising in work with athletes (amateur and professional) as well as pregnancy and post natal.
How did you become a pilates teacher?
I suffered an athletic injury in my early teens whereby I landed on my coccyx, jarring my spine. I had tingling sensations down to my knees and elbows and struggled to sit for many months. I underwent intensive physiotherapy for 3 months which got me moving again but I was left with a slightly misaligned pelvis and over curvature of the lumbar spine. In practice this meant almost constant lower back pain and numbness in my left leg due to sciatic nerve damage. I spent the next 5 years seeking medical help to return to my previous health but nothing provided lasting relief. It was the discovery of Pilates in my early 20s that proved to be the turning point. Strengthening my core relieved the back pain and rediscovering pelvic alignment and muscular strength cured the sciatic nerve damage. Needless to say, I have been committed ever since!
What do you love about teaching Pilates?
What don’t I love! Seeing people leave my class smiling, laughing, relaxed and thanking me for helping them feel better; seeing clients improve as the weeks and months pass; helping athletes overcome injury and achieve their athletic goals, seeing new mums regain their physical strength and self-confidence; supporting clients overcoming surgery and back pain. Helping people find an hour of calm, relaxation and personal space within their hectic weeks so they feel ready to tackle life outside the studio!
What is your greatest professional achievement?
A large number of clients arrive at my classes with back problems ranging from mild pain brought about by daily activities, to those with chronic spinal issues facing surgery. Helping those individuals improve their physical strength and reduce their pain brings me enormous joy. As someone who knows how debilitating a spinal injury can be, these cases are especially close to my heart.
How do you relax?
A long slow run with an inspiring playlist.
What is the top of your bucket list?
Visiting New Zealand. It looks like such a beautiful country and as a lover of the great outdoors I want to climb the mountains, kayak the rivers and enjoy the wildlife.
Give one piece of advice for life?
Be courageous enough to be yourself and follow your dreams. Don’t feel you have to follow the crowd and please others with your choices.
As a child what did you want to be?
An athlete! (100m sprinter actually. Linford Christie was my hero)
